Review: Sons of Rico – Amplifier Bar

Saturday 18th June,2011, Amplifier Bar, Perth : Review by Katie Rolston

Before the first chord echoed out across the room, there was nothing special or particularly standout about Perth band, . But as soon as they were hit by the lights it was all about music, noise and feeling those electric tingling vibes. It was just what a gig should be about – get-up-and-go songs that hit you with a punch of life making you want to groove – and before you realise it, you’re singing the wrong words simply because you just want to be a part of the tasty crème.

There’s something old-school about these guys too which is very appealing. In addition to their sound – which brings back that good old falling in love, Rock n’ Roll sensation – the songs are upfront and understandable without ever hiding behind indecipherable, melodramatic lyricism. The simple truths here are a winner. The ability to love your own music with other people, have fun with the crowd and remove that invisible barrier that separates the two makes everything worthwhile. And the Rico lads are all about sharing their musical love. Understated confidence, joke-about antics and personality have certainly earned a big tick around the traps and judging by the crowds cheering which ricocheted of every wall in the room, it doesn’t look like they’ll be slowing down anytime soon.

They created a chilled out “jam meets performance” type atmosphere, cautious to stay focussed on impeccable delivery whilst maintaining top-notch sound quality. Guitars faced each other front on and keys looked like they had spells being cast over them with playful head shakes and arms going everywhere – it’s no wonder they sounded so good!

Sons of Rico are just so together. Every note is hit like a true pro but they still manage to maintain that certain fun and light hearted stage presence which always keeps punters entertained. There’s no way to single out any element of this group of guys – the percussion is right on, the bass and electrics are sharp and the keys are as playful as their master.

They saved the crowd fave ‘Miss Adventure’ until last with noticeable satisfaction and smiles all around. Oh so proud of Perth!
