Saturday 30th Janury, 2010 – Review by Cadbury
The show kicked off with WEST END RIOT, who are all under age themselves. With a namesake that comes from The Living End, the sparse crowd who were there early heard a mixture of punk, rockabilly and even some metal.
Next up were MONTAGE OF JESUS, who’s fan base spent the show wearing Mickey Mouse ears as what was supposed to be a political statement against Disney. Montage Of Jesus’ sound can be described as NOFX meets Nirvana with the occasional skank thrown in for good measure. This heavily rhythm and bass driven band allows singer Ben to get on with singing as opposed to worrying about playing his oversized guitar.
After Montage Of Jesus, it was time for SURPRISE SEX ATTACK to shock the kiddies at their punk rock initiation. Anyone who has never seen these guys will be happy to know that old style punk is still going. Out of time and unsure how their songs started, SSA were channeling the 80s punk spirit. Surprise Sex Attack are worth seeing just to hear their between song banter alone.
With the next band, came the rock n roll kindergarten. A few young children were treated to the KUILLOTINES, who were an aural slug to the chest. They even managed to perform a clap along song for both the young and old involved.
Project Mayhem were moved down the bill and played their usual set of catchy punk n roll. Singer Benny Mayhem was exceptionally cocky on stage and started wandering through the crowd, and even occasionally able to achieve audience participation from some crowd members at the back of the dance floor.
After Project Mayhem, it was time for some of us to fill our stomachs. A full car later and we were at the local fish and chip shop on Guilford road. A small and sparse shop with regular pricing but limited menu, this place sufficed for 4 sugar filled caffeine hyped hungry punters.
Last to play were THE FAIM PROJECT, who performed a very short set due to noise restrictions. However in that short amount of time they played their hearts out with a set that was entertaining to boot. A highlight of the night proved to be Noah Skape, vocalist, who ripped off his shirt to reveal an all ages friendly red bra.
Since the show, the Project Mayhem crew has hinted at more all ages shows at the same venue. For Perth music’s sake, I sincerely hope that the shows continue.
