Review: cKy @ The Civic

Wednesday 11th August 2010- Review by Cadbury

It was a cold, rainy night when were set to brace The Civic. The venue was filled with a long snake-like queue, and singer/guitarist Deron Miller was having a smoke with a member of the supporting crew out the back.

’s set was energetic and full of wryly self-deprecatory humour and crazy chugging riffs coupled with brutal guitar solo wankery. The lads’ obvious sense of fun proved contagious, and spectators found time to both laugh and headbang, sometimes in the same breath.

Up next was . Lead guitarist Alex Cotton did a damn fine job of playing and moving about the stage even with a broken ankle. play that ‘fuck yeah’ style of hard rock ‘n’ roll. The two stand out songs of the set were ‘Red Hot Pussy Liquors’ and ‘This is Blood Rock’.

When jumped on stage and started with ‘Escape from Hellview’, fans knew it was going to be an amazing night. Guitarist, Chad I Ginsburg, proved to be highly energetic, to say the least. He was clearly there to entertain, jumping off the stage, posing for photos, and bitch-tossing his guitar to the delight of the crowd. After ‘Escape from Hellview’, the set list went out the window and the band started taking requests. The heavy riffage of ‘Rio Bravo’ got the crowd moshing and yelling along to the words. Ginsburg was living and feeling every word of the gruesome lyrics (about a man who kills his wife).

The band continued to take requests from the crowd, playing the songs which were yelled the loudest. The crowd selection saw a good spread of songs from the band’s main four albums, as well as cKy’s rendition of GG Allin’s ‘Bite It You Scum’, which was led by Chad whilst Deron Miller changed guitars.

Newest band member, Matty J, was at home on stage for the entire show. Unfortunately, he had some bass troubles during ‘Disengage the Simulator’ and had to complete a quick bass changeover. Meanwhile, drummer, Jesse Margera, was doing what a drummer should do: that is keeping a steady beat.

The band finished the show on a heavier version of ‘Close Yet Far’, the perfect ender for any album or set. The end of the set left the crowd hungry for more cKy goodness which they never got, but no one was left disappointed by the show itself.
