Sultry, smooth and a little bit sassy, Nicola Milan has a voice you will remember. Instantly likeable for its velvety, mellow timbre this talented Perth vocalist, songwriter and multi instrumentalist has a three and a half octave range and demonstrates amazing vocal control performing her eclectic mix of original Latin jazz, blues and folk fusion.
Her style has been described as a sultry version of Norah Jones; smooth Latin and soulful blues next to cheeky swing and all with her own quirky twist. Nicola’s compositions invite you into a web of emotive lyrical content and lingering melodies that leave you reminiscing of long days at the beach and nights filled with stars.
“I write the lyrics and melody at the same time. It starts with an emotion and the song reveals itself from there” Nicola says of her songwriting methods. It has been noticed how well crafted her work is; beautiful phrases and skilled arrangements which immerse the listener in the message of each story.
“People have always commented on how much they like my singing voice, which is great, but now they are starting to comment on my songwriting which is what really makes me happy”. Indeed, after the release of her debut EP ‘Little Rendezvous’ in December 2011, Nicola’s work has gained the attention of those in the industry with her compositions being speculated to “become standards in their own genre” (Lee Buddle, Crank Recording Studio).
2011 has seen Nicola sing for the United Nations’ “UN Women” at a gala fundraising event held at The Ellington Jazz Club in August and lend her vocals to performances for the Sugar Blue Burlesque Dance Troupe’s “Black Market Cabaret”. She performed at the Fremantle Festival, the World Sailing Championships Festival and sang at venues in Perth including The Ellington Jazz Club, The Bakery and Jazz Fremantle.
In October, Nicola released her first music video for her song ‘Just A Kiss’ directed by Johnny Ma and is known for her composition of the theme song for the popular web series “Flatmates” and writes for several web productions including MilsnDils.com.
Nicola is also a skilled cartoonist and co-author of the hilarious “Monster in Law: A Survival Guide” currently being published by Vanguard Press, UK and due for release in early 2012. She is heading to the UK in April 2012 to promote the book and will be performing shows in London, New York and New Orleans.
