SCREAMO
Originating in a country town that cares little and has a minimalistic way of supporting the arts of any form one group of four young men have managed to break free from the grip of regional conformity and do exactly what they want, the way they’ve always wanted to do it.
Originating several years ago Next To Nothing played a plethora of shows throughout the South West and Regional areas that established them as a persistently loud and active band on the map but it wasn’t until August of 2008 when on the road supporting national act ‘Envy Parade’ that the realisation they wanted to take things in a completely new direction arose.
For months the lads’ were showless and instead put their focus into the writing of their debut seven track EP titled ‘If I Fall’ released on April 17th.
The disc based loosely around Keith Gisborne (vocals, guitar, keys) lifelong friend, Chloe Weaver’s short story, ‘The Perfect Mask.’ Adapting a unique approach touching sensually upon the screamo’ genre with progressive twists and droany yet appealing melodies the ensemble felt comfortable with their new direction.
Song after song was written flowing easily from the well of their new creativity, with minimal disruption between sessions. The EP is a lyrically just and a blatant stab at the self loathing majority that do little to improve they’re self worth and had been written (by Shane Urbini - bass, vocals) in such a way that really makes you question not only yourself but your reason for existence and your place in the world we live in.
December 6 (2008) saw the band enter a studio close to home; ‘Cymblistix’ run by Darryl Preedy who also recorded local acts like Rethrone, Tedium, Silence Is Murder amongst numerous others. The process was long with various things getting in the way.
Come the beginning of April (now 2009) the band had completed what they’d put so much into and with the inclusion of Justin Harvey (of Christina Rose) featuring heavily on the discs second track ‘I <3 Wayne King,’ ’If I Fall’ is definitely a completely different outlook over the entire post hardcore, screamo scene that’s been developing as of late.
From April 16 through to May 22 the band will be on the road playing everywhere from Amplifier in Perth City to Collie in the deep South West and will be bringing friends, bands and a lot of good times to every venue they attack.
Come October of this year the guys will hit the road once more, this time on a national level playing into their wildest dreams and then heading back to the writing books and preparing to embark on a full length album… what it will end up as nobody knows.
All that is certain is Next To Nothing, with a fierce backbone and heart of the band Jared Gisborne (drums), Mark Jordan (guitar, vocals), Keith and Shane the album will take a different approach and will incorporate music at it’s most bizarre… only time will tell.
Keep your eyes and ears peeled!
