Live Review: Future Classic At Perth Festival

Saturday night saw a further continuation of Perth’s revitalisation when Sydney record label and tour group took to the heart of the cultural centre to deliver an evening of underground beats.

As part of the Perth Festival, signed artists such as , , , and various DJs, enveloped the Chevron City Gardens in a pool of electronic ambience and new-age cool. The event was a showcase of the variances and similarities of ’s representatives, with each performer playing short sets highlighting their best, newest or most popular tracks.

Set amongst the backdrop of Perth Museum, the Chevron City Gardens are a cultural extravaganza set to awaken our sleepy west coast city. Decorated with an outback twist; think corrugated iron, old cars, wood, broken appliances, tin lanterns and light bulb fairy lights; the gardens collect Perth’s culturally aware to mingle amidst music, booze and food.

On the other side of the faux corrugated iron divider, running as the garden’s backdrop, is the main stage. Immediately is a standing area, which at the beginning of the night was occupied only by rogue and drunken dancers thriving off excitement and infusions. Above them, tiered seating splattered with the odd orange couch housed the remaining guests.

ScenicFirst to play was , a four piece from Perth who are Future Classic’s latest signing. Lesser known but achieving a welcome response, Scenic seemed shy and a little more music and sound orientated than the groups that would follow them. Guitar heavy and spacey, Scenic delivered dance tracks that were exquisitely chilled and which epitomised the warm summer night in which they were presented. They did however promise one more song, which never arrived as they were hurried off stage by organisers.

PanamaSecond to play were , a rapidly rising quintet from Sydney. With their overly enthusiastic family in the crowd, Panama oozed through tracks such as ‘It’s Not Over’ to present the nostalgic yacht rock cross house music that they have become known for. Also taking a front seat in this act was the band’s musicality. Busting out keyboards, drums, guitars, vocals, maracas and a saxophone; Panama excited the audience with their upbeat performance, ability and interaction.

Following the release of their latest record, Brisbane-based four piece were next to take the stage. Strikingly positive and engaging, Mitzi immediately took note of their attendees and launched into a set of their indie dance and disco tunes. Taking the opportunity to showcase tracks from their freshest LP ‘Truly Alive’, the quartet got fans and observers dancing and filling up that once barren standing section.

Flight FacilitiesSet to continue the dancing, final performers transformed the stage into a DJ platform and energetic radiance. Dressed in two different pilot uniforms, the duo opened with a mix of ‘Clair De Lune’, and continued into a never-ending mix of old tunes and their own tracks. This set saw the emergence of the crowd’s characters, including dancing queens on the stairs to the tiered seating and a streaker with an old-school cord phone. When the mix folded into crowd favourite ‘Foreign Language’, guest performer Jess Higgs emerged to perform vocals and further amp up the already bobbing pit in front of her.

Noticeably missing from the line-up was Future Classic’s most successful artist, it-boy Flume. However with the demonstration of talent and breezed out, mesmerising dance orientated music, his colleagues could easily be next in line.

Proving that Perth can house incredible cool, Future Classic for the Perth Festival delivered perfect summer ambience in a venue that should become a regular sensation for the growing population refusing to believe that Perth is still asleep. And, that Australian music just keeps getting better.
