Perth’s newest darlings, YOUNG REVELRY have been hitting the East Coast hard with a sling of regional and metro shows. After a week off from touring, the band is in Melbourne to play at the iconic Espy. Fresh from buying a cardigan, front man Sebastian Aston spoke of how the band fell in love. ‘I went to uni with Tom and we studied microbiology. We picked up Pete when I put an ad in the quokka for a guitarist. No we didn’t really find Pete in the quokka. I was at a studio one night and he was there and we were looking for a second guitarist at the time and Pete swanned into the room. And I thought – that guy looks pretty cool and luckily he was alright.’
In their short time together, Young Revelry has made an impressive dent in the Australian music scene. “You and I” the band’s debut EP, has been well received in Australia, garnering appreciation from Triple J talking heads and audiences alike. Sebastian isn’t one to get caught up in the adoration. ‘The response (over East) is much the same as it has been in WA, except it’s over here. It’s hard to tell, a lot of people only know one song.’ One out of seven isn’t so bad.
The band’s relaxed style of raw, melodic indie rock comes easily to the four-piece. Sebastian explains the dynamic, ‘It flows pretty easily because we’re all mates and we all love each other. It’s pretty fun hanging out and usually we get a few songs sorted when we’re together.’ Young Revelry’s relaxed approach to song writing is evident in their choice of recording studio; Straw House, located in the heart of the Western Australian outback. The EP was produced by Woody Annison, the man behind Aussie talents such as Children Collide, Red Riders and Rocket Science.
In the past year Young Revelry has conquered Southbound, One Movement and even Crabfest, a family friendly seafood festival. So what’s next for the fledgling four-piece? ‘I don’t know if we’re going to do an album, single or EP but we’re definitely got a bunch of demos so it’s a matter of tying them all together and making them sound cohesive.’ Catch Young Revelry when they support Children Collide at Capitol on April 25th and for headline shows at the Prince of Wales on the 28th and the Newport Hotel on the 1st May.
