Interview : Seams

Interview by Kaitlyn Offer

Ah pop music. It’s that familiar genre that divides and conquers like no other. For some, it creates happy and fun times and for others well.. maybe not so much. Still, to the folks that love it through and through the genre provides an opportunity to create something new and fresh – something that will erupt onto the music scene and blow people’s minds. W.A’s indie-pop titans SEAMS definitely fall under the latter and when it comes to mind-blowing tuneage, these guys do it large.

The group of neighbours and multi-instrument enthusiasts had been jamming for years before finally forming in early 2010. With influences stretching from Pink Floyd and the Beach Boys to Animal Collective and Vampire Weekend , offer what they have exasperatingly titled experimental space-pop, post-punk lush psychedelia.

“We offer something I don’t think others are doing, something left of centre. We wanted to try and avoid clichés.” says singer/guitarist Lyndon Blue. “We try to keep it as danceable as possible.” Blue goes on to say.

Luckily for them, their efforts are already paying off. The quartet is fresh from playing Laneway festival and now have a tasty little run of gigs ahead of them. On top of that, they are set to finish recording their new EP at a Leederville studio. “I was kind of a little dubious about making an EP. They do tend to be used purely as promotional tools, but there’s also the appeal of having something physical, something people can hold” Blue admits.
Blue went onto describe the band’s latest recording as an “Australiana affair with marsupial related and forresty tunes.” That being said the EP will no doubt be an impressive mix filled with both tunes fans will already be familiar with – as well as some brand spanking new ones to boot. No matter how you describe them, Seams are definitely on the up in the local scene.

Seams support Melbourne band Green, Green, Green on March 5 at the Bakery.
