Interview by Chris Martin
Taking their name from a nursery rhyme, I, Said The Sparrow have quickly become one of the leading players in Perth’s alternative rock scene. With a sound that is equal parts emo and electro, I Said The Sparrow are now ready to make a sound on a national level. Bassist Tristan Sturmer is amazed by what the band has achieved in such a short amount of time, and even he cannot explain why the band can now tour the eastern seaboard. “I guess we just worked hard to play the shows we wanted to play within Perth, and impressed enough people to acquire a helping hand in organizing a national tour.”
The band consists of Sturmer, lead singer Sean Hendry, guitarist Jason Shaw and drummer Clint Gatter. Given the electronic nature of their music, why is there no keyboard player? Sturmer explains that a fifth member would just mess up the band’s chemistry. “We have an extremely tight relationship between 4 people that we don’t really want to mess with by throwing more human variables into the equation. Saying that we will probably eventually kick out Jase and replace all guitar parts with synths and electronics”.
Touring in support of their debut single, I’m a Villain and I’m Online, the single’s B-side boasts a surprise, a remix of another of the band’s songs, Mirrors. Is this a ploy to expose the band to a new fanbase. Not according to Sturmer. “I don’t think that the remixed track was primarily set out to attract a different type of crowd to the band. Saying that if it gets the name out to a wider range of people through the association with the djs involved, then… that’s mad!”
A band’s first tour is a massive milestone in the band’s history, and I, Said The Sparrow are eager to spread their wings and take up the challenge. Sturmer explains that the band is only too keen to expand its horizons. “[We would like to] experience the music scene on the east coast. Meet some new and interesting people. Expand our fan base.”
