Interview by Sarah Robinson
Put on your dancing pants because Hungry Kids of Hungary has kicked off its Aussie tour. With four shows in WA, the band is sure showing the love for the State of Excitement. Kane Mazlin, (keys/ vox) answers some pertinent questions for Space Ship News.
Your band name is one of Australian music’s biggest enigmas. Can you appease your fans with an explanation?
It came from a friend of ours, Neil. He won’t even explain the backstory of the name to us. One day we may understand.
The Final Escapade Tour kicked off a couple of days ago. Any shenanigans so far?
The first leg involved lots of driving. Wogga-Ballarat-Adelaide-Melbourne. Sleeping three hours a night and watching Tim and Eric all day in a van has definitely impacted on our mental health this week.
What’s the best thing about touring?
Hanging out with your friends and watching Tim and Eric.
…and the worst?
Sleep deprivation…definitely.
What kind of response have you been getting from your live shows?
We are playing some new songs this tour. We’re rather excited/ relieved to be playing new material and the crowds have been very kind so far. We’ve also got a couple of collabs happening which have been going down nicely.
Perth people are big on your touring side-kick, The Chemist. What’s your take on the band?
We had seen them play a couple of times previously and loved them. I actually find their tunes a little bit sexy, like there is some pent-up dark sexiness to them or something. We’ve also discovered they play some rather intellectual games in the touring van which put our ‘would u rather…’ game to shame.
Do you write on the road?
No, I can’t write on the road. I seem to be one of those people that need to be in a quiet place to get anything done.
Is there anything you do to relax whilst touring?
Dinner before a show is usually a good way to sit and relax. Food is relaxing. I thought maybe I’ll take my running shoes this tour but I forgot them. A beer after a show is enjoyable too.
What’s next? World tour, new album, movie cameos…
We’re disappearing for a while after this tour. We’ll be writing for album number two and taking a little break. It’s been a rather full on two years.
Finally, have you been to Hungary?
One day!
Hungry Kids of Hungary tour WA this month. Catch them at the Prince of Wales on May 5th, the Indi Bar May 6th, the Rosemount May 7th and at the Newport Hotel on May 8th.
