Interview: Gyroscope
Review by DAN CRIBB

It’s been a big year for local heroes GYROSCOPE with the release of their fourth album ‘Cohesion’. The CD was recorded in Monmouth, Wales with producer Gil Norton who has also produced the Foo Fighters and The Pixies. Says drummer, Rob Nassif, the group’s been receiving a lot of good feedback about it’s latest effort and really enjoyed recording it.

“We took 12 months to write this one – we had a few tours in-between which stretched it out – but at the end of the day we spent a bit of extra time writing it, and we got a better result, so it was worth it,” Nassif said. “We were writing the kind of songs that we could imagine playing at a Big Day Out or playing at a packed Capitol show.”

Around the same time ‘Cohesion’ was released the boys had encountered a problem with their previous label Warner: the label decided to release a ‘Best Of’ album, composed of tunes from the band’s first three albums, without the group’s knowledge. “We found out about it when Zok [lead guitarist] was looking at our Facebook and on there someone had asked ‘What’s up with the Best Of up on iTunes?’ Zok went to iTunes and found the Best Of up there and there wasn’t anything we could do. Warner didn’t ask us, and they went behind our back, that’s where the issue is.”

Local hardcore act BREAK EVEN is supporting for the Perth leg of the tour. Nassif says that one of the reasons the group was chosen to play on the bill was his love of the band’s album ‘The Bright Side.

“They’ve obviously changed their sound a little bit, which in hardcore circles I think some people might complain about, but I think it’s awesome! We actually offered them the whole tour but they’d already committed to their own.”

The tour begins this Saturday at the Prince of Wales in Bunbury, then Sunday at Metro City. Break Even are playing both shows and you can get your tickets from www.ticketek.com.au.
