Interview by CADBURY
cKy have landed on Australian soil for the second time: the first time ever for Perth. Australia, where the pool balls are smaller, and we drive on the wrong side of the road, in the wrong side of the car – something which is wholly shocking and strange to everyone in America. I got to talk to singer/guitarist Deron Miller at their Perth show about his family, the new recordings, and his side project, World Under Blood.
cKy have been pigeonholed into every type of genre possible over their 13 year career. “People are afraid of things they can’t label,” says Miller. “In the 90s, we were post-grunge, and in the early 2000s we were nu-metal or skate punk, now we’re just cky. We don’t follow in the footsteps of anything that’s going on. We never have…we’ve never changed the core of our sound which is that we like to write riffs and just be ourselves.”
When trying to get information about the night’s set list off Miller, he simply replies that it hasn’t been written yet, but no doubt 10 minutes before the set, it would be written on the back of some paper plates in the absence of an empty beer carton. When asking about future Australian dates, Miller admits that he doesn’t know them. “I just go where the band goes,” he says. “I’m the worst at geography, I don’t know anything about tour dates or what parts of Australia, what parts of Europe, what parts of America…” However, in an instant Miller recalls that he’s been away from his family for two and a half weeks. He can’t wait to get back to America in a week’s time for his son’s first and his grandma’s ninetieth birthday.
cKy fans can look forward to new recordings which include a song for Jackass 3 called ‘The Afterworld’. Miller says fans will have to wait to hear it as the credits roll when the film is released in October. “It’s a good song, it’s a good cKy song to come out with after ‘Carver City’ has come out. We also did a couple of other songs, one called ‘Step to cKy’ which is an instrumental song we did as part of ‘Infiltrate Destroy Rebuild’ tapes.”
The band also recorded a song Miller wrote for ‘Volume 1′ that never made the final cut for that record: ‘The Deepest Depths’. The band also rerecorded ‘Halfway House’ in its original heavy format; however they are unsure as to whether or not they will release this song. Miller says “It still needs work; it’s not up to our standards yet.” There are 3 more songs Miller wants to record as soon as possible, but stays tight-lipped about.
However, Miller states that the new recordings will not be coming out as an album, but as singles due to the death of the album format. “The album format has declined to the point where it’s no longer. It’s sad cause I used to buy records and CDs and tapes and all that stuff and to see that die was something I never expected.”
Miller has been given a window to work on the cKy recordings due to a delay on the release date of his side project World Under Blood‘s album, ‘Tactical’ which will be out next year.
