Gallery : Pond – ‘Frond’ Album Launch

Friday 16th July, 2010 – Photos by Luka Dickmann

Paisley Adams, Jay Watson and Joseph Orion started POND under a mulberry tree in a quiet suburb in Perth to play at a party they had agreed to that evening. After living, recreating and lounge-room jamming together over the preceding months in 2008, the three invented their fantasy band and first album, writing songs which later became Psychedelic Mango.

They’ve since released two other home recorded albums Corridors of Blissterday & Shit! A Cosmic Jam! (under the name Space Lime Peacock) through WA label Badminton Bandit; played around Australia, New Zealand and Japan; supported the likes of Eddy Current Suppression Ring, Pikelet, Bachelorette, Philadephia Grand Jury; and played the ST Jeromes Laneway Festival, among other dishy things.
Now comes Frond, ’s third full length recording (the first to see the band move out of the bedroom and take to the studio at Black Bird), encompassing the power of Blue Cheer and the quirk of early Sparks with the fantasy of glam era Bowie. Frond will be launched in WA at two parties on July 16 (Norfolk Basement, Fremantle) and 17 (The Bird, Perth). The album is being released through boutique Sydney based label Hole in the Sky, with the first single Cloud City currently on rotation on good radio stations.

The ethos is of an ever-changing membership that flows around the original trio, and sees them each taking the lead at various points of the writing/recording process while the live show is constantly expanding or shrinking in a carousel of assorted Perth musicians, lights, bubbles, friends, freaks and instruments. The somewhat recent addition of Tame Impala front-man Kevin Parker on skins has seen the tribe strengthen and solidify in a vein somewhat reminiscent of the currently sleeping Mink Mussel Creek, a band which saw Paisley, Joseph and Kevin coming together to blow minds some years ago. Together with Jay Watson (Tame Impala’s Drummer) and Jamie Terry of The Silents, POND ride the bigger groove, presenting a live show which fluctuates between bad-ass riffery, dream-scape bliss and triumphant epic funk-rock, with every consideration given to gripping melody. POND live is for everyone who loves fun.

this Perth quintet seem to excel on every instrument placed in front of them …It’s all smiles on dials on stage and off and a joyous performance such as this reminds us that merrymaking plus mad skills equals a potent elixir…Immerse yourself in the mercurial wonderment that is Pond.’
