PROGRESSIVE ROCK / METAL
From Deep within is a group of three very good friends from Perth, Western Australia, who formed a rock band in their last year of high school – 2005. Like many bands, FDW originally started as a bunch of bored teenagers jamming covers in a garage on the weekends. This group consisted of founders Patrick Gengler and Brendan Manns on lead guitar and bass respectively with couple of school friends holding other roles, which changed various times.
Eventually, Pat and Brendan decided to record a couple of original tunes that they had written. Unfortunately (though fortunately in the long run), their then-drummer was unavailable for the months in which they planned to record, so Brendan and Pat called on friend David Meyrick to act as a session player for the impending demo. When Dave came to learn the songs and practice with the boys, something clicked and, despite initial reservations, Brendan and Pat eventually asked Dave to join the band, which he was all too eager to do. They began writing new instrumental material as three-piece.
Not long after, the boys’ friend Aaron was approached to be the band’s vocalist. After some persuasion, Aaron agreed and, a mere few months later, the band played the school rock show and had a blast.
After the boys had graduated high school, however, things began to change for various reasons, which saw the departure of Aaron and saw the band on an indefinite hiatus.
Half a year later, in early 2007, Brendan and Pat got together and began writing again. One day, in a chance encounter in the liquor store at which Patty was working, Pat informed Dave of the new tunes and asked Dave if he was keen to start writing music again. With that, the band began again, with Aaron back on vocals.
While the three instrumentalists became more inspired than ever after this reunion, Aaron decided he had neither the voice nor the time for the band and subsequently left. Pat, Brendan and Dave made the decision to push on as a three-piece, distributing lyrical and vocal responsibilities amongst themselves, giving Pat the additional role of lead vocals.
Soon, Trev McDonell, manager of Subspace Music, came down to give the boys a listen before deciding to take up the task of managing the band, much to the trio’s glee. On the 1st of September, 2007, the band played its first ever show. From then, a string of Subspace shows was organised for the band in September and October.
In January, 2008, the band recorded a new demo at Sounds Suite Studios in which they re-recorded the tracks ‘Something Less Than Humans’ and ‘Grey Mass’, and laid down ‘A Blueprint for a Cure’. The band soon began gigging again afterwards.
In August 2008, the band began work on their debut release, featuring eight tracks, at Bergerk! Studios. Simultaneously, Subspace Music was brought to an end. The band plans to release the forthcoming disk in early-to-mid ’09.
