Review by Alanna Eileen
THE GHOST HOTEL’s stylish brand of alternative country sounds better than ever on ‘Juliette’. The latest single from this five-piece is a three and a half minute display of great song-writing and musicianship that instantly grabs your attention.
Made up of Aaron Gibson, Matt Geary, Stevie Rea, Jake Snell and Paul Wood – all of whom are multi-instrumentalists and share vocal duties – The Ghost Hotel has been playing around Perth for the last few years in various formations. Their sound is a fresh and original amalgam of rock and country that recalls both classic pop songs of the ‘70s and the Americana leanings of more recent bands like Wilco.
‘Juliette’ features electric lead guitar twanging brightly over a casually strummed acoustic that builds into an energetic crescendo after the bridge. A halo of gorgeous harmony embellishes the vocals and makes the chorus shine. The lyrics are simple but manage to maintain the kind of poeticism that makes for great songs.
With ‘Juliette’ The Ghost Hotel have shown they are capable of producing music that is as catchy as it is classy. This is certainly a band to watch.
